Online Seminar «Catechetical Education and Mission: Challenges and Perspectives» will be held on November 23, 2023
Online seminar "Catechetical Education and Mission: Challenges and Perspectives".
Speaker: Priest Phillip Calington Ph.D. Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, Singapore. Lecturer, St. Tikhon´s Orthodox Humanitarian University, Moscow.
The Russian Orthodox Church has historically been on the forefront of missionary activity. We need here mention just figures like St. Nicholas of Japan and St. Herman of Alaska, who both in the past 200 years brought the light of Holy Orthodoxy to nations that culturally were very different from their native Russia. In modern times, the Russian Church has extensive missions all over the world, and in the last few years, a big focus has been put on Africa and South-East Asia, which both now are under the jurisdiction of Patriarchal Exarchates of the Moscow Patriarchate.
In this seminar, we will focus on catechetical education in the context of mission. We will examine some of the challenges faced, as well as perspectives for the future. Questions like acculturation of the Church are very important topics, as well as how religious education is to be conducted. Likewise, mission in a metropolis like Singapore, versus remote villages in Papua New Guinea, are two extremely different contexts, with their own challenges.
The Church is doing what it can to answer the call of Christ, to baptize every nation. How this is happening and how it will happen, is still a topic open for discussions, and we invite you to participate in these discussions.
